Interview with Jennie Marts
My Interview with Jennie Marts, author of
BN: When did you start writing?
Jennie: I have always written stories and kept a journal, but I started seriously writing my first novel five years ago.
BN: What inspired you to write your first book?
Jennie: I have always known that I wanted to write a book someday. Then I turned forty and decided it was time to make that dream a reality and just went for it.
BN: Any routines before you start writing. Do you write an outline or go with the flow?
Jennie: I have a loose outline, but mostly just go with the flow. Sometimes I have to wait for the story to come to me, but I usually know the beginning, middle and end. I don’t necessarily have any routines, but I do use a kitchen timer to help me stay focused and on track when I am writing.
BN: What inspired the idea for Another Saturday Night?
Jennie: I wanted to write a story like the kind of books I like to read. I love stories about friends and how they support each other so I wanted the book club concept. I knew I wanted a dog, a mystery, lots of comedy and a hot hero. Plus I love a happy ending!
BN: How did you come up with the title?
Jennie: I love clever word play and the dates were all on Saturday nights, so I thought it would be fun to use that in the title.
BN: What was your favorite part to write and why?
Jennie: I loved writing the dates and putting Sunny in funny situations. My favorite date to write was the online date with Phil the Fisherman. I loved the picnic and having Maggie and Cassie spying on her from the bushes.
BN: Is your book part of a series? If so, how many books do you plan on being in the series?
Jennie: This book is the first in the Pleasant Valley Page Turners Series. I plan to make it a series of seven books, each with the day of the week in the title. Each book will feature a different woman in the book club, but the same characters will be in all the books. The next book should be out later this Fall and it is Maggie’s story. (And yes, even Edna gets a book! And you will love it!)
BN: Which of your characters are your favorite and why?
Jennie: Sunny is my most favorite, probably because she is the most like me so I identify with her. But, I love Edna! Her character is a mixture of both of my grandma’s and I just love to hang out with spunky old ladies.
BN: What are the books links?
Okay now that we know a little about your writing life and your books, tell us a little about yourself.
BN: What do you like to do outside of writing? Any interesting hobbies?
Jennie: I am an avid reader. I love to play volleyball. I love going to the movies and eating greasy popcorn. And I love to dance, whether it is with a group of girls having a fun night out or slow dancing in the kitchen with my husband while we are waiting for dinner to cook.
BN: Do you typically read the same genre you write?
Jennie: Yes. I love a story that makes me laugh, fall in love with the characters, then sigh at a great happy ending. My favorite authors are Janet Evanovich, Nora Roberts and Susan Elizabeth Phillips.
BN: What is your all-time favorite book?
Jennie: That is such a hard question. Probably the Harry Potter series. And I religiously buy every new Stephanie Plum as soon as it comes out!
BN: Tell us something random about you.
Jennie: My favorite day would be spent at the pool with a good book, an icy Diet Coke and a bag of Cheetos. I am a hockey mom with a big laugh and a big heart and I am a huge hugger!
